sodium ion battery technology is the future of electric vehicles

Sodium-ion batteries are rechargeable batteries. Due to its abundance in nature, the cost of raw materials and the manufacturing of sodium-ion batteries will be cheap and cost economic. The development of sodium batteries started in the 1990s. Safety wise the sodium ion battery is low risk for aqueous batteries and high risk for sodium in carbon batteries.

If the sodium batteries are commercially viable, then the cost of batteries in the electric vehicle industries will be low, when comparing the lithium ion batteries. The future of clean transportation is sodium-ion batteries. The newly developed sodium-ion battery technology will reduce the cost of batteries for electric vehicles by 30%. The sodium ion battery had a long lifespan of more recharge cycles and faster charging when compared to the lithium-ion batteries. Due to the cost-effective and long-term prosperity of the industry, technologies like sodium-ion batteries will be soon in the market for electric vehicles.

KPIT is the first company in India to launch the technology of sodium in batteries. Some other companies like Swedish firm Northvolt, UK based company Faradion have claimed that they installed their first sodium ion battery.

One of the drawbacks of the sodium ion battery is, that it has lower energy density when compared with the lithium-ion battery, so the lithium-ion batteries can provide a higher driving range when compared to the sodium ion batteries. But sodium-ion batteries have abundant natural resources, so it is 30% cheaper than the lithium-ion batteries.

The main advantage of the sodium-ion battery is that it can be charged at a faster speed twice than lithium-ion batteries. Another advantage is that the sodium-ion batteries are not affected by the temperatures in comparison to the lithium-ion batteries.

Since sodium ion batteries are new in the electric vehicle market it is difficult to say whether the sodium ion batteries are safe or not.

Due to the increased demand for mining lithium that results in the shortage of EV batteries, as more drivers buy electric vehicles, the alternative and cheap electric vehicle battery will be the sodium ion battery in the future of the automobile industry. The sodium has an abundant supply and the manufacturing process of producing the sodium ion battery is cheaper than the lithium ion battery.
