Common frauds happening in petrol pumps all over India

Nowadays due to shortage and demand for petrol, there is a rise in petrol prices all over India. The petrol stations in India are doing some illegal acts to cheat customers. There are more chances are there that the petrol stations would preset the machine to pour less petrol when compared to the quoted rupee. This may happen more for the round figure like Rs 500, 1000, or 5000. To avoid this cheat, we need to fill petrol for not this round figure rupee, then we need to buy petrol and diesel for Rs 405 or 1575, etc. This makes it difficult for petrol station staffers to cheat customers.

Note that the reading is reset to ZERO. The person in the petrol station will try to press fuel into the petrol tank with the value as the previous customer filled the petrol. For example, if that person has filled petrol for 100 rupees, then you asked to fill for 500 rupees, the person in the fuel station will press the fuel without resetting. So beware that the reading in the machine is reset to ZERO before pouring petrol.

Another way of cheating the customer is filling the high-performance fuel, which means without asking you whether to fill normal petrol or high-performance fuel. The employees in the petrol pumps will start the high performance which means extra mileage fuel with a high rate without the verbal consent of the customer. So tell the employee to fill what you need, before they start filling your petrol tank.

WHILE PUTTING PETROL in your vehicle, don't tell the amount of petrol while sitting in the car, so get down from the vehicle and stand in front of the person who fills the petrol in the tank and tell the amount and look for the zero point in the reading that means the vendor had reset the number to zero, before that if you are alone, make sure that you take the car key and locked the doors. Don't distract from the site of seeing the reading and whether the nozzle point is there, I mean the pump line is in your vehicle fuel tank. Make sure that he reset the value of the reading to zero before starting to fill.

Always make sure that the meter shows ZERO while the oil nozzle is entered into the car tank.

Ask the person in the fuel station to lock the dispenser nozzle, sometimes they manually press the start and stop or regulate the flow of fuel without constant press the dispenser, this makes some ml of fuel locked into the dispensing machine due to air lock which is created. More the amount of fuel you fill by manually pressing the dispenser by them, the more loss of fuel. So make sure the dispenser handle of the fuel-filling hosepipe is locked. For that don't say fill the tank, instead, tell the amount of fuel or rupees for that you need to fill your fuel tank with a lock in the filling machine handle with a constant flow of fuel through the hosepipe.

As per the studies, 200 ml of oil is saved for every 10 liters of oil. This means that if you are asking for a FULL Tank, you are probably losing close to 500-750 ml depending on your tank size.

The solution for this is simple. Make sure the attendant locks the nozzle and does not interrupt till the auto-cutoff point is reached. Also, the hosepipe should be raised as high as possible while taking it out of the tank. Don't get distracted while filling the petrol except for an emergency. distract you for Cash/Card or Car Polish, etc
We generally look at the amount only and do not pay much attention to the quantity displayed. Some websites where I researched this fraud also mentioned that in this kind of unauthorized meter reset, the meter amount blinks which is an indication that it was reset in the wrong manner.

At some petrol pumps where they offer to check the engine oil level and refill the water level. I don’t understand why my engine oil is always low only when I reach the petrol pump. While checking the engine oil, they won't measure the exact value, instead, they stop to measure till the level that will indicate low engine oil.

As unleaded petrol does not emit harmful compounds, it helps in preventing health diseases like bronchitis, asthma, lung diseases, and other respiratory disorders.

At every petrol pump, a meter reading on the petrol vending machine is taken at the start and end of the day. Sometimes it’s taken during shift changes. So, the point here to note is that the meter reading of the start and end is taken. Each transaction is not reported one by one. So at the end of the day, the only thing which is checked is the oil sold and the amount collected through Cash and Card. If fraud is done for Rs 500 and the payment happened by card, the attendant can take the Cash of Rs 500 out of all the cash collected.

USE CARDS FOR PAYMENT, BEFORE THAT KNOW YOUR CARD LIMIT FOR SURCHARGE WAIVER FOR FUEL PAYMENT.

Where to complain against Petrol Pump?
Make sure you pay at the end of the transaction
In case the meter is stopped for any reason, offer to just complete the transaction and fill the petrol at the next station or the next day.
In case you are not satisfied with anything or want to complain – do insist on the complaint book, as the oil companies take the complaint book very seriously.
