HEMIARTHROPLASTY

         It is the partial joint replacement, replacing only one side of a joint. For example head of the femur is replaced with artificial component and the acetabulum is left as it is.



INDICATION:

  •  one half of the joint is affected
EXAMPLE: fracture neck of the femur in the elderly person.

PROSTHESES:
    
         The prosthesis used are 
  •  single piece - monopolar.
  •  2 piece - bipolar. In bipolar, motion occurs between the two parts of the prosthesis.
         The prosthesis can be cemented or uncemented.
  •  cemented - bonded to the host bone by bone cement.
  •  uncemented - natural bonding occurs between the host bone and the prosthesis.


OPERATIVE TECHNIQUE:

  • exposing the hip
  • dislocating the hip
  • resecting the ends
  • medullary canal for receiving the prosthesis
  • implanting the prosthesis
  • reducing the hip
  • closing the wound

POSTOPERATIVE:

        Rehabilitation is needed.
